Thiruvalathoor

Thiruvalathoor is famous for an ancient temple which flaunts its magnificent woodwork and stone sculptures. Legends say that the outer wall of the temple was constructed by an army of Gods, but being unable to complete it till dawn they left it unfinished as they didn’t want to be seen by humans. The wall still stands unfinished despite repeated efforts by the humans to build it.

Thenari

Thenari is considered as a holy place and is located on Pollachi road from Palakkad town. The famous Sree Rama temple at Thenari is dedicated to Lord Rama and the natural spring in front of this ancient temple is considered as sacred as the waters of holy river Ganges. It is believed that Lord Rama and Sita had visited this place during their exile days.

Jain Temple of Jainimedu

Built in 15th Century, Jainimedu is a Jain temple and is located 3 kms away from the centre of Palakkad. This temple was constructed by a Jain Leader Inchana Satur and is dedicated to Chandraprabha, a Tirthankar of the Jain faith. This granite made masterpiece of history is 32 feet long and 20 feet wide and it displays image of the Jain Thirthankaras and Yakshinis. Greatly admired Malayalam poet Kumaranasan, wrote his prodigious poem called Veenapoovu (The Fallen Flower) at a Jain house somewhere near this temple.

Tipu’s Fort

Tipu’s Fort or the Palakkad Fort stands high in the heart of Palakkad. A protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India, this fort was made by Hyder Ali, the emperor of Mysore province in 1766. The fort possesses an open air auditorium called “Rappadi” within its immensely wide grounds. There is a small shrine called Anjaneya Swamy Temple inside it and children’s park on its other side. It is one of the well preserved forts of southern India.

Kalpathy Shiva Temple

Kalpathy is one of the ancient ‘Brahmin Agraharams’ in Kerala, located in the heart of the town. ‘Ratholsavam’ is held during middle of November, a famous festival of Palakkad.
